ABOUT THIS ITEM
This playbill features a production of William Shakespeare's play King Lear at the Theatre Royal, Sadler's Wells in February 18-something (the exact year isn't visible) under the management of Samuel Phelps. Phelps, appearing as King Lear in this production, has been credited with revolutionising performances of Shakespeare's plays during the 19th century by restoring the original text of the first folio. The playbill notes that The Stranger was also being performed at the theatre at the time, while The Miser was scheduled for 'March 2nd'. This playbill was framed using conservation framing by Fairfax Frames Ltd.
This framed playbill poster is in good condition, with the expected signs of wear and tear from age - the original playbill is worn in parts from age and usage and the frame has a chip - but the piece is still legible and an important historical piece.
